How to File Claim in $145M Kia Theft Settlement

A few years back, a TikTok challenge caught the eye of Kia owners by highlighting how certain models could be stolen without a key—a major security oversight. Insurers weren’t pleased and pushed for action. Now, if you own one of these affected Kia vehicles, you can file a claim as part of a class-action lawsuit.

The issue stemmed from 2015-2021 Kia models lacking standard anti-theft technology found in most cars. Owners, manufacturers, and state Attorneys General called on Kia to step up security measures to prevent thefts, and Kia did respond. They offered a software upgrade to owners without electronic immobilizers, reducing theft rates by over 50%.

But insurance coverage wasn’t straightforward for these cars. Some insurers limited coverage for these vulnerable Kia models, making it tricky for owners. After a lengthy legal process, a federal court approved a $145 million settlement with Kia, ending claims of defects that made theft and damage easier.

The settlement includes compensation ranging from $250 to 60% of a car’s value for impacted drivers. To benefit, owners need to submit claims with proper documentation of vehicle ownership, prior reimbursement, and qualifying theft or damage incidents. Eligible vehicles include various Kia models from 2011-2022.

If your Kia is on the list, check out Kia’s settlement website to see if you qualify and file a claim. Stay informed and ensure you have all the necessary documents handy to get the compensation you deserve.
