SEC Vows to Crackdown on Ponzi Schemes to Protect Investors
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is prioritizing investor protection as a fundamental part of its mission in 2025. The commission is committed to cracking down on Ponzi and pyramid schemes while also creating an environment for legitimate investment opportunities to flourish.
Dr. Emomotimi Agama, the Director General of the SEC, shared this message with the capital market community in a New Year address, expressing optimism about the year ahead and the possibilities it brings for the capital market.
In the coming year, the SEC will focus on key initiatives to enhance market integrity, boost investor confidence, and drive economic growth. Dr. Agama highlighted the importance of integrating the Nigerian Capital Market into the economy as a central priority for the Commission.
Enforcement is crucial for effective regulation, and the SEC is working to improve its investigative processes to hold wrongdoers accountable. Measures are being taken to combat insider trading, increase transparency in securities transactions, and streamline the resolution of market disputes through the Investments and Securities Tribunal (IST).
One key area of focus for the SEC in 2025 is strengthening the legal framework of the commodities market to support economic development. The Commission recognizes the importance of the commodities market in Nigeria’s agrarian economy and aims to bolster regulatory structures to facilitate growth and create a strong foundation for a vibrant commodities ecosystem.
Dr. Agama emphasized the SEC’s commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive capital market this year, with the goal of generating wealth, instilling confidence, and making a meaningful impact. He called on all stakeholders to collaborate in achieving these objectives and unlocking the full potential of the Nigerian capital market.
The SEC’s vision for 2025 is to steer the Capital Market towards a direction that ensures development reaches every Nigerian. Together, through collaborative efforts, the SEC and stakeholders can make a significant difference in the economic landscape.
