Attorneys File Class Action Against OHA Over Bed Bugs

Tenants living in Omaha Housing Authority properties are taking a stand against bed bugs by filing a class action lawsuit. This legal action, led by prominent attorneys Justin Wayne, Steve Wandro, and Jeffery Lipman, addresses what they describe as a long-standing nightmare. Jeffrey Lipman expressed his shock at the severity of the infestation, calling it “as bad as I’ve ever seen.”

The lawsuit touches on concerns dating back to 2016 when OHA first became aware of the bed bug issue. Low-income residents across various Omaha projects have been enduring what attorneys describe as a distressing situation for almost a decade.

Michael Coleman, a resident of six years, shared his experience of living with bed bugs, explaining how the critters infest his bed and even his cat on a daily basis. Coleman expressed his hopes for change and a desire to reclaim his self-worth, stating that living in a bug-infested environment has made him feel worthless.

This lawsuit aims to secure compensation from the Omaha Housing Authority, along with aggressive inspection and treatment plans. Residents are requesting a swift resolution to the problem to regain peace of mind. The treatment process could take up to three months per tower, with about 1,700 units requiring attention. The legal team emphasizes the need for a significant effort from pest management professionals to tackle the issue effectively.

Despite reaching out for comment, OHA declined to provide a statement due to the pending litigation. Residents are hopeful that the lawsuit will lead to significant improvements in living conditions across OHA properties in Omaha.
