Marques Brownlee on Influencer Lawsuit Against PayPal Honey Extension
Popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, also known as MKBHD, recently addressed some controversies surrounding the Honey browser extension. The extension, owned by PayPal, is currently facing a $5 million class-action lawsuit. In a video he released on December 31st titled “The Honey Scam: Explained,” Marques expressed his disappointment over allegations of withholding affiliate revenue and manipulating discount codes by Honey. In response to these claims, he decided to distance himself from the platform by removing its ads from his content.
The controversy began to gain attention after an investigative YouTuber named MegaLag released a video exposing deceptive practices by Honey, which also involved several other influencers. As a result, over 3 million users have uninstalled the extension. High-profile creators like Linus Sebastian from Linus Tech Tips have also shared their thoughts on the issue. Linus mentioned that he stopped promoting Honey a few years back due to concerns about link hijacking.
Additionally, YouTuber and lawyer Devin James Stone, also known as LegalEagle, has taken legal action against Honey, accusing them of unfair practices that harm creators and consumers. Despite these allegations, PayPal has denied any wrongdoing, stating that Honey follows industry standards and benefits both shoppers and merchants. This situation has sparked a lot of online debate about transparency in influencer marketing and ethical data practices.
