Crown Wards Class-Action Lawsuit Faces New Obstacle

Thousands of people who experienced abuse and assault while under Ontario’s care are facing more legal challenges in their class-action lawsuit against the province. The lawyer leading their case, Margaret Waddell, has moved to a new firm, which she believes will strengthen their case. This news may be unsettling for many former Crown wards, like Arthur Gallant, who endured abuse in various placements and is now being treated for PTSD.

Gallant expressed concerns about potential delays and uncertainties caused by this change, echoing the sentiment of many others who have experienced trauma in their past. Though Waddell is confident that the move will benefit the case, former wards have not received official communication about this development.

The Crown wards’ lawsuit dates back to 2012 and involves allegations of abuse spanning several decades. Initially settled in 2021 for $10 million, the deal was later contested by many former wards, leading to a ruling indicating that the settlement did not adequately address the harm caused. Despite these challenges, the fight for justice continues for those who suffered abuse while under the province’s care.
