Aeroplan faces class-action lawsuit over alleged withdrawal of welcome bonus points
A recent national class-action lawsuit claims that Aeroplan account holders lost their welcome bonus points after signing up for a second credit card.
According to Jeff Orenstein, a lawyer at Consumer Law Group, who filed the lawsuit against Aeroplan, TD, and CIBC, in October of this year, around 17,000 people received emails informing them of changes to the terms and conditions dating back to October 2022. These changes stated that individuals with more than one Aeroplan credit card could only receive bonus points once, resulting in many losing the welcome bonus points if they signed up for multiple cards.
The welcome bonus points in question were 10,000 points each, with each point valued at approximately $200. This meant that the affected individuals could have lost significant monetary value in their points.
In terms of the response from Aeroplan, TD, and CIBC, there have only been appearances in the filed cases so far, indicating an intention to defend. The next steps of the case will involve seeking certifications in Quebec and Ontario, with the aim to get judges assigned and hearing dates scheduled.
For affected Quebec residents, reaching out to the Consumer Law Group website will keep them informed of any updates or settlements in the case. Over 5,000 people have already contacted the group through their website.
In a statement, Air Canada, CIBC, and TD refrained from commenting on the matter, given that it is a legal proceeding. Air Canada mentioned that it intends to defend itself vigorously. CIBC declined to comment, and TD did not respond to requests for comments.
