M&A Activity Slows Down in December: What You Need to Know

December saw a slight slowdown in mergers and acquisitions compared to the previous couple of months, but the year-to-date numbers still show a strong performance outpacing 2023.

In December, there were 25 transactions reported by MDM involving distributors in building supply, industrial, or commercial hardgoods industries. This is a decrease from November’s 31 transactions and October’s 30. If we look back further, December’s numbers were lower than the 36 distributor M&A deals in December 2023.

Even with the slowdown in December, the total for 2024 hit 346 transactions year-to-date, averaging almost 29 deals per month. This is a significant jump from the 304 deals averaging 25.3 per month in 2023.

To give you a visual snapshot of how distributor M&A activity has trended since 2023, take a look at the breakdown per month in MDM’s news coverage. Remember, consistency is key in understanding these trends.
