Top Trends in Trucking Technology for 2024
In 2024, the trucking technology industry was bustling with activity. We saw lots of companies coming together, more artificial intelligence making its way into the mix, and of course, the cybersecurity concerns that come with it all. As we gear up for 2025, let’s take a look at the top five trends that really made a mark in trucking tech this past year.
First off, there was quite a bit of M&A action in 2024, and it looks like we can expect even more in the year ahead. A big deal that made headlines was Platform Science’s announcement that they’re acquiring Trimble’s telematics business, set to close in 2025. We also saw Bestpass-Fleetworthy take over Drivewyze. And let’s not forget about Clarience Technologies picking up Safe Fleet and DAT Freight & Analytics getting their hands on Trucker Tools. These mergers and acquisitions are sure to shake things up in the trucking industry.
Speaking of changes, Zonar, one of the few telematics providers certified for the California Air Resources Board Clean Truck Check program, made some moves in 2024. They were joined by Geotab, another provider certified by CARB. This program requires heavy- and medium-duty vehicles in California to report their emissions testing results. While only a few telematics devices like Geotab and Zonar have been certified, CARB assures us there won’t be a shortage of testing equipment when emission testing requirements kick in. Carriers can also use non-continuously connected devices for testing multiple vehicles. If you’re wondering which type of device is best for your fleet, check out our in-depth look at the tech.
With all these changes and advancements, it’s clear that the world of trucking technology is constantly evolving. Stay tuned for more updates as we head into 2025!
