Courage, Controversy, Calamity: Insights into India in 2024
In a year filled with challenges and setbacks, 2024 was a time most Indians are eager to put behind them. Despite the turmoil, tales of bravery and resilience stood out, providing hope for a better future.
One such hero was A. Sabeena, a nurse from Tamil Nadu, who showcased extraordinary courage by ziplining across the Chaliyar River in Wayanad, Kerala, to rescue 35 lives after a devastating landslide. Witnessing the destruction of entire villages, Sabeena selflessly volunteered to cross the river when no male nurses were available. Her act of bravery went viral, earning her the Kalpana Chawla Award for Bravery from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Another inspirational figure of 2024 was Dr. Madhav Gadgil, a scientist recognized for his lifelong dedication to conservation and advocacy for marginalized communities. Despite facing opposition to his recommendations for protecting the Western Ghats, which led to environmental crises, Gadgil remained steadfast in his efforts. At 82 years old, he continues to champion environmental causes, having established India’s first biosphere reserve, the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, in 1986.
Similarly, Ritu Singh, a Dalit professor, showcased resilience in the face of adversity. Denied tenure at Delhi University in 2020 due to her advocacy for Dalit issues, Singh has continued to fight against systemic discrimination. Her slogan, “Naukri nahi, nyay chahiye” (I demand justice, not a job), encapsulates her determination to seek justice and equality.
Despite the challenges of 2024, the stories of courage, advocacy, and resilience remind us of the power of individuals to make a positive impact in the face of adversity. As we look towards the future, let’s draw inspiration from these heroes and work towards a brighter tomorrow.
