Macy’s Plans to Close 65 Stores After Holidays: Impact on Nevada
Macy’s is making moves to reposition its business, with plans to close up to 65 stores after the holiday season—15 more than originally announced earlier this year. In their recent third-quarter earnings report, the department store giant revealed a 2.4% decrease in net sales compared to the same period last year, with total net sales reaching $4.7 billion.
CEO Tony Spring shared in the earnings call, “We now expect to close roughly 65 locations this year, following our typical post-holiday closure cadence.” These closures are part of Macy’s strategy to phase out underperforming stores and focus on a leaner, more efficient retail footprint. The company is aiming to close a total of 150 underperforming stores by the end of 2026.
The initiative driving this change is aptly named “A Bold New Chapter,” which emphasizes strengthening the Macy’s brand, accelerating luxury growth, and modernizing operations for a more customer-centric approach. Spring highlighted that this initiative challenges the status quo and aims to create a more modern Macy’s Inc by enhancing the overall shopping experience, product assortment, and value offered to customers.
While Macy’s didn’t specify which specific locations would be closing when asked, it’s essential to note that the company currently operates eight stores in Nevada. With a nationwide presence of 435 Macy’s locations and an additional 77 small format, furniture, and backstage stores, Macy’s continues to be a prominent player in the retail industry.
Furthermore, Macy’s subsidiary brands, Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury, reported positive growth in the third quarter. Bloomingdale’s observed a 1.4% increase in net sales and a 3.2% rise in comparable sales, while Bluemercury opened eight new stores and experienced a 3.3% increase in sales compared to last year.
As Macy’s navigates its path towards a more streamlined and customer-centric future, the closure of additional stores post-holiday represents a significant step in their transformation journey. Keeping an eye on how these changes unfold will be crucial for understanding Macy’s evolution in the retail landscape.
