Sellinger Announces Resignation: Insider NJ – News Update
Philip Sellinger, the United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey, recently announced his resignation, effective January 8, 2025. In a statement, Sellinger expressed gratitude to President Biden for the opportunity to serve as the temporary head of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and emphasized the dedication of the career Assistant U.S. Attorneys and staff in upholding the office’s traditions.
Sellinger highlighted several key achievements during his tenure, including the successful initiatives to combat violent crime in New Jersey. By strategically focusing on violent street gangs in Newark, Jersey City, Camden, and Paterson, the efforts led to a significant decrease in shootings and murders over the years. For example, the total number of shooting victims decreased from 1,166 in 2021 to 733 in 2023, with a continued decline in 2024.
In addition to addressing violent crime, Sellinger emphasized the importance of protecting civil rights in New Jersey. Under his leadership, the first standalone Civil Rights Division was established within the U.S. Attorney’s Office to address hate crimes and uphold civil rights for various communities. Notable achievements include obtaining hate crime convictions for individuals targeting the Orthodox Jewish, Muslim, and Black communities, as well as addressing systemic racism by major banks and advocating for vulnerable populations like veterans.
Sellinger’s office also made significant strides in combating economic crimes and government fraud. One notable case involved investigating and prosecuting TD Bank for failing to prevent money laundering, resulting in a landmark guilty plea and over $1.8 billion in criminal penalties. Other prosecutions included cases of securities fraud, insider trading, and market manipulation, as well as addressing public health risks related to lead pipe replacements in Newark.
Moreover, the Cybercrime Unit led international efforts to combat ransomware groups like LockBit, which targeted numerous institutions globally. By charging key members of LockBit and disrupting their operations, the unit helped prevent further financial losses and cyber threats.
Lastly, Sellinger’s National Security Unit worked closely with the FBI and other partners to address domestic and international threats in New Jersey. Cases ranged from individuals making mass shooting threats to prosecuting those providing support to foreign terrorist organizations.
Sellinger’s comprehensive approach to law enforcement and public service has left a lasting impact on the District of New Jersey, as his tenure saw significant achievements in various areas such as combating violent crime, protecting civil rights, addressing economic crimes, and enhancing national security efforts.
