Global Mergers and Acquisitions Deal Volume to Surpass $3 Trillion

In the year 2024, global mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are expected to surpass $3 trillion, marking an 11% increase. Interestingly, deals valued at over $5 billion have spiked by 19% since the start of the year, although the total number of deals has dropped by 20% to a nine-year low. Some of the headline-grabbing transactions include Mars acquiring Kellanova for a whopping $35.9 billion and Capital One Financial’s acquisition of rival Discover Financial Services for $35.3 billion.

Industry experts are predicting that with Trump’s potential return to the White House, there might be less scrutiny from regulators on large mergers, especially when compared to the cautious approach seen under Biden. While M&A activity has slowed down in recent months, there has been a surge in deals following the November elections in the US. Notably, the US is leading the charge, accounting for 46% of global M&A activity this year, with deal value up by 8%. Similarly, the European market has experienced a 20% growth during the same period. It’ll be interesting to see how these trends unfold in the coming months.
