Unemployment Class-Action Settlement Ending Soon: Check Your Eligibility
Michigan residents who had their pandemic-era unemployment benefits clawed back by the state have until tomorrow to opt into a settlement that could provide some relief. A substantial $55 million settlement has been earmarked for these claimants, offering a chance for some financial restitution.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the US unemployment rate soared to unprecedented levels, reaching an average of 13% in the second quarter of 2020 compared to just 3.5% before the pandemic hit. Many individuals who found themselves without work during this time later alleged that their benefits were unfairly recouped by the state, leading to a class-action lawsuit and subsequent settlement.
The class-action lawsuit Saunders, et al. vs. State of Michigan Unemployment Insurance, initiated in January 2022, accused the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency of wrongfully reclaiming unemployment benefits distributed during the pandemic. A resolution was reached in April, resulting in $55 million being designated for eligible claimants.
To qualify for this settlement, individuals must have had their benefits seized by the agency between March 1, 2020, and April 25, 2024. Eligible recipients should have already received notification, but can also confirm eligibility through their Michigan Web Account Manager or by contacting the settlement administrator directly.
If you meet the criteria, you can submit a claim through the settlement administrator’s website using the required claim number and PIN. The deadline for claims submission has been extended to tomorrow, December 20, so prompt action is advisable.
While payment estimates average around $250 per claimant, exact payout timelines remain uncertain. A final hearing is scheduled for March 20, 2025, with the possibility of appeals potentially delaying disbursements.
