Macy’s to shutter 150 stores: Impact on Greenville SC location?

Macy’s is joining the ranks of retailers streamlining their locations, with plans to close a significant number of stores by 2026. While initially announcing the closure of 50 stores by the end of this fiscal year, Macy’s CEO Tony Spring revealed in the third quarter earnings report that around 65 locations will actually be shuttered by the end of the year, following the holiday season.

In a bold move dubbed “A Bold New Chapter,” Macy’s aims to close 150 “unproductive stores” by 2026, which amounts to approximately 30% of all its locations. In contrast, the retail giant plans to invest in 350 “go-forward stores” as part of its strategy to revitalize its offerings and customer relationships.

Although Macy’s is scaling back some of its namesake stores, it remains committed to expanding Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury. Over the next three years, we can expect to see 15 new Bloomingdale’s stores and a total of 30 new Bluemercury stores, with plans to renovate 30 existing locations. Already this year, five Bluemercury stores have received a facelift, and nine new locations have opened.

As for Macy’s stores in South Carolina, the company has not yet disclosed specific locations that will be affected. However, as of now, two stores in the state are still open: Macy’s Haywood Mall in Greenville and Macy’s Columbia Mall in Columbia.

While the retail landscape evolves, Macy’s is adjusting its footprint to better serve customers and stay competitive in the ever-changing market. For more updates on this developing story and other trending topics, stay tuned for the latest news.
