Macy’s 2024 Closure Plans: 65 Stores to Close, Wisconsin Locations Impacted

Macy’s recently announced plans to close 65 of its stores by the end of 2024, up from the 55 locations previously stated. The closures are part of Macy’s larger strategy to close underperforming stores as outlined in their “A Bold New Chapter” plan, which aims to shutter 150 locations by 2026.

CEO Tony Spring mentioned in the recent earnings call that these closures will take place post-holiday, with the company focusing on investing in 350 “go-forward” stores. Additionally, Macy’s is testing new retail strategies in their “First 50” initiative across 50 select stores, seeing positive sales growth in these locations.

While overall sales were down 3.1% compared to the previous year, Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury, both under the Macy’s umbrella, saw increasing sales. As part of their expansion plans, Macy’s intends to open 45 new Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury locations in the coming years, with five Bluemercury locations already remodeled this year.

Unfortunately, Macy’s has not disclosed which specific stores will be closing in 2024. Wisconsin is home to four Macy’s locations, including two in the Milwaukee area, but it is unclear if any of these stores will be affected by the closures.

In Wisconsin, you can find Macy’s stores at the Fox River Mall in Appleton, Southridge Mall in Greendale, Hilldale Mall in Madison, and Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa. While there are no Bloomingdale’s locations in the state, Wisconsin is home to two Bluemercury stores in Brookfield and Madison.

Keep an eye out for further updates on Macy’s store closures and expansion plans as the company continues to navigate its “Bold New Chapter” strategy.
