Impact of Tech Provider Mergers on Trucking Customers
In recent months, we’ve seen some big moves in the world of technology companies that serve the trucking industry. From Bestpass-Fleetworthy to Drivewye, Empire, Zonar, GPS Trackit, Powerfleet, and Fleet Complete, the landscape is changing with consolidations.
One of the major deals making waves is Platform Science’s plan to acquire Trimble’s telematics business. This acquisition, which includes PeopleNet, is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2025. And it’s not just this deal—additional mergers could be on the horizon.
In a recent transaction, Zonar merged with GPS Trackit, while Fleetworthy snagged a commercial vehicle parking violation management company in New York City. Jacques DeLarochelliere from Isaac Instruments mentioned that these mergers were somewhat expected given the challenging market conditions of the past few years.
DeLarochelliere also pointed out that the market is quite fragmented, with only a handful of significant players like Solera Omnitrax, Trimble/PeopleNet, Platform Science, and Isaac dominating the telematics space for trucking fleets. This fragmentation is likely to lead to further mergers and acquisitions among smaller players in the industry.
For companies like Isaac Instruments that rely on partnerships with companies like Trimble, these consolidations can actually improve collaboration and innovation. According to DeLarochelliere, the Trimble/Platform Science deal will likely strengthen Trimble’s position as a partner for businesses like his.
Overall, these consolidations aim to address the gaps in services that no single provider can fully meet for trucking companies. Dave Brajkovich from Polaris Transportation noted that with these mergers, companies can benefit from a more comprehensive suite of solutions that cater to their diverse needs.
