Rocket Lab’s Latest Suborbital Hypersonic Launch Achieves Mission Success
Rocket Lab USA, Inc. recently pulled off a major success with its latest suborbital hypersonic launch. The launch, which took place in November, was part of a mission to test hypersonic technology for the Department of Defense. This crucial mission provided hypersonic test launch capabilities as part of the MACH-TB project, aiming to advance hypersonic flight testing for the United States in support of technology maturation.
The project was awarded by the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Crane through the S2MARTS OTA vehicle on behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense Test Resource Management Center. According to George Rumford, Director of the TRMC, leveraging commercial launch services allows the nation to test components early and frequently, speeding up hypersonic development.
Rocket Lab’s test platform showcased a range of cutting-edge technologies optimized for hypersonic technology tests with significantly increased payloads. The company not only launched the experimental hypersonic instrumentation for this mission but also handled the design, manufacturing, assembly, and integration on a highly accelerated timeline.
Brian Rogers, Rocket Lab’s Vice President of Global Launch Services, emphasized the critical need for hypersonic technology testing and highlighted the company’s commitment to serving the nation with successful test launches. Rocket Lab has been a key player in launching missions to space for both commercial and government customers since 2017, with over 200 payloads deployed from its U.S. and New Zealand launch sites.
