ANZ Names Nuno Matos New CEO After Shayne Elliott
ANZ Bank Welcomes Nuno Matos as New CEO, Taking Over from Shayne Elliott
Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) has introduced Nuno Matos as their new chief executive, succeeding Shayne Elliott, who will retire in July 2025. Matos, a seasoned international banker, brings over 30 years of global banking experience to the table, having worked in various countries like Peru, Brazil, Mexico, and Hong Kong. Most recently, he held the position of Global Head of Wealth and Personal Banking at HSBC. Matos, 57, will be relocating from Hong Kong to Melbourne to lead ANZ, Australia’s fourth-largest bank.
The Chairman of ANZ, Paul O’Sullivan, expressed his confidence in Matos’ leadership abilities, comparing his recruitment to signing a star football player. Shayne Elliott, the outgoing CEO, who has been with ANZ for nearly nine years, oversaw significant initiatives during his tenure, including the acquisition of Suncorp Bank for $4.9 billion. Elliott expressed his pride in leading ANZ and will ensure a smooth transition by staying on as an advisor until October.
Matos steps into the role at a challenging time for ANZ, with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) investigating allegations of bond market manipulation by ANZ traders. Additionally, integrating Suncorp Bank into ANZ’s operations will be a key focus for Matos as he takes the helm. Despite challenges, Matos is excited about the opportunity and shared his vision for the bank, emphasizing the need for speed, precision, and performance-driven strategies.
Under Matos’ leadership, ANZ will continue its focus on technological transformation, migrating customers to new platforms to enhance their experience and operational efficiency. With a strong focus on innovation and customer-centric growth, ANZ is poised to navigate challenges and opportunities under Matos’ guidance. As Elliott bids farewell, he leaves behind a streamlined and future-ready organization, proud of the bank’s progress and achievements. The future looks bright for ANZ under the leadership of Nuno Matos.
