Republican lawmakers are optimistic that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will handle their roles at the DOGE with integrity, dismissing concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Musk and Ramaswamy recently appeared on Capitol Hill to emphasize their commitment to cost-cutting, meeting with both excited Republicans and cautious Democrats.

Rep. Lloyd Smucker, R-Pa., expressed his enthusiasm about the nongovernmental commission focused on improving efficiency in Washington, while some Democrats, like Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest given Musk and Ramaswamy’s business interests.

House Republicans, however, are confident in Musk and Ramaswamy’s ability to streamline the federal government, emphasizing their successful track records in business. Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, stated that he holds both individuals in high regard and sees no reason to doubt their integrity.

Both Musk and Ramaswamy have significant holdings in industries regulated by the federal government, raising some ethical concerns. Musk, in particular, has faced legal challenges in the past but maintains a strong influence in various sectors.

Despite the attention surrounding Musk and Ramaswamy, members of Congress reminded the public that ultimately, they have the authority to decide on budget cuts. Republicans like Rep. Scott Fitzgerald, R-Wis., emphasized the importance of responding to constituents’ needs and interests.

While Democrats like Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., raised questions about the DOGE’s influence and accountability, Sen. John Fetterman expressed admiration for Musk’s past work. The level of impact Musk and Ramaswamy will have on government operations remains to be seen, but for now, it’s a topic that continues to spark discussion on Capitol Hill.
