NHL Insider Speculates on Trade Interest in NY Islanders Forward Brock Nelson

The NHL trade deadline is still a few months away on March 7, 2025, but it’s never too early to start thinking about potential moves for the NY Islanders and their forward Brock Nelson. Nelson is considered a valuable trade asset for the Islanders, with many teams interested in his scoring ability, leadership, and versatility within the top 6.

According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, the Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild are two teams to keep an eye on as potential landing spots for Nelson. The Stars, who recently placed Tyler Seguin on IR, have additional cap space to work with and could be looking to make a move for Nelson. Similarly, the Wild, with GM Bill Guerin’s admiration for Nelson, could also be in the mix.

However, the decision to trade Nelson ultimately depends on the Islanders’ position in the playoff race. If they remain competitive, GM Lou Lamoriello may opt to keep Nelson on the roster. But if the Islanders continue to struggle, a trade could be on the table.

With Seguin out for the season due to surgery, the Stars have freed up significant cap space that could be allocated to acquiring Nelson. On the other hand, the Wild has dead cap space coming off the books next summer, providing them with flexibility to potentially extend Nelson if a deal can be reached.

In the end, both the Stars and the Wild have promising prospect pools and draft picks that could benefit from adding a player of Nelson’s caliber. As the trade deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds for Brock Nelson and the NY Islanders.
