Mattel Faces Class Action Lawsuit for Pornographic Site on Wicked Doll Packaging
Mattel is facing a legal hiccup over a mixup on their Wicked doll packaging that led unsuspecting kids straight to a porn site, Wicked.com, instead of the movie’s official website, WickedMovie.com. A woman from South Carolina is now taking the toy company to court in a class action lawsuit after her daughter stumbled upon explicit content not meant for young eyes. The lawsuit claims that Mattel failed to provide a refund for the mishap, causing emotional distress to the child and her mother. As a result of this error, the dolls were swiftly removed from major retailers like Target, Amazon, and Kohl’s. Mattel advised consumers who wanted to avoid the scandalous detour to either discard the packaging or somehow cover the misleading link.
Surprisingly, the adult-themed escapade didn’t deter fans from flocking to see the actual Wicked movie in theaters. The film raked in an impressive $112.5 million during its opening weekend and has since amassed a domestic total of $263.2 million. Despite the lawsuit looming over the incident, Universal’s Chief Marketing Officer, Michael Moses, remains unfazed about the movie’s success. He believes that the scandal is just a minor blip on the radar that won’t harm the movie’s performance. So, while Mattel might be dealing with some legal troubles, it seems that the Wicked dolls’ accidental detour to a porn site hasn’t dulled the excitement for the musical in theaters.
