NHL Report: Rantanen’s Potential $14M AAV on Open Market
Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen is eyeing a potential record-breaking contract extension. According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, Rantanen believes he could command an average annual value of $14 million if he hits free agency next summer, matching the league’s current highest-paid player, Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers. However, it’s more probable that Rantanen and the Avalanche will reach an agreement on a contract extension before free agency kicks in.
Rantanen, who is in the final year of a six-year contract that pays him $9.25 million per season, has expressed his desire to stay in Denver. The 28-year-old forward has been a key contributor to the Avalanche, tallying 440 points in 354 games during his current deal.
Reports earlier this month suggested a potential $9 million increase in the NHL’s salary cap for the next season, but Commissioner Gary Bettman downplayed this projection. Regardless of the cap situation, Rantanen’s performance on the ice speaks for itself, with 32 points in 23 games so far this season.
Drafted 10th overall by the Avalanche in 2015, Rantanen has established himself as a top player in the league. His impressive stats and contributions to the team make him a valuable asset for the Colorado Avalanche as they seek to secure his long-term commitment.
