FCCPC Addresses Consumer Rights Violations with GTBank, MTN, and Air Peace

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is launching investigations into consumer complaints against major players in the banking, telecommunications, and aviation sectors. These inquiries, set to kick off on December 3, 4, and 5, will look into allegations of poor service delivery, exploitative practices, and violations of consumer rights.

Ondaje Ijagwu, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, announced that Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) will be under scrutiny in the banking sector for recurring issues like network failures that impede customer access to funds and banking applications. In the telecommunications realm, MTN Nigeria is facing probes regarding complaints about undelivered data services, unexplained data depletion, and inadequate customer support.

Air Peace Limited, representing the aviation sector, is facing allegations of exploitative pricing, particularly concerning sharp ticket price increases for advance bookings on certain domestic routes.

These investigations are carried out under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, allowing the FCCPC to scrutinize practices that harm consumer rights, disrupt fair markets, or facilitate unfair competition.

The Commission stressed that these engagements are intended to address consumer complaints, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote accountability. Companies under review are expected to appear before the FCCPC to clarify their practices and provide the necessary information for resolving complaints.

FCCPC reiterated its dedication to safeguarding consumer rights and urged the public to report instances of poor service delivery or exploitative practices through official channels.
