Constructing a New Rail Route from Dhaka to Chittagong

Since the dawn of railway communication in undivided India 170 years ago, the railway network in Bangladesh, especially the Dhaka-Chattogram section, has remained stuck in time, following outdated British-established routes. This stagnation can be attributed to bureaucratic delays and a lack of forward-thinking from railway authorities. However, there is hope on the horizon as Bangladesh Railway is now considering a new approach to improve connectivity between major economic hubs.

A new rail route from Dhaka to Chattogram via Narayanganj and Cumilla is in the works, aiming to create a more direct path between these two cities. This new route is expected to reduce travel time by two hours and cut distance by 80 kilometers. Currently, trains between Dhaka and Chattogram travel on a century-old Tongi-Gazipur line, spanning 321 kilometers. With all necessary approvals in place, including from the Planning Commission, the proposed project is awaiting the green light from the Railway Adviser.

Once this new rail route is up and running, it is poised to have a significant positive impact on the national economy and the import-export business. By reducing travel time and costs, this new route will not only make transportation more affordable but also ensure timely shipment of goods, particularly crucial for the export of items like ready-made garments.

This forward-thinking project comes at a crucial time for Bangladesh Railway, which has been struggling with significant financial losses. By embracing modernization and efficiency, this new route could potentially turn things around for the railway service in the country. While countries like China and Japan are introducing cutting-edge technologies in their railway systems, Bangladesh has an opportunity to catch up and improve its infrastructure.

With a new government in power, there is optimism for the efficient and transparent completion of projects like the Dhaka-Chattogram line. By focusing on the greater good and preventing personal or vested interests from hindering progress, Bangladesh Railway can usher in a new era of improved connectivity and economic growth.
