Letter to an Advocate: Exploring Advocacy in 2023
Hi Jim,
I wanted to share my thoughts on Robert Whitaker and his impact on our understanding of mental health treatment. Before Whitaker’s work, it seemed like those following the traditional medical model were a bit lost, not really knowing what they were doing. But then Whitaker came along and shed light on the pharmaceutical industry’s role in harming patients, bringing clarity to a previously confusing situation. It felt like he was on a mission, and I was excited to see where it would lead.
I was particularly intrigued when Whitaker mentioned the possibility of a class-action lawsuit against the drug companies and the APA. However, I’m disappointed that there hasn’t been any movement on that front yet. Have you heard of any developments in this area? Kermit Cole at MIA wasn’t aware of any progress when I asked.
Whitaker’s revelations have opened up a whole new world of understanding, revealing complex details that are crucial for navigating the challenges faced by mental health patients. While I’m frustrated by the lack of legal action, I hope that behind the scenes, investigators are working hard to uncover all the necessary facts to build a strong case. The scandal needs to be fully exposed for any real change to occur and for patients to finally see some justice.
My biggest concern is that legal advocates may not be prioritizing Whitaker’s findings in the way they should. Do you have any updates that might ease my worries?
Sorry if this letter turned out more rhetorical than intended. By the way, I’m currently in Baltimore.
Thank you for your time and insights,
