Judicial Notice: Importance of Following the Leader (11.24.24)
Legal News Update: All About Trump’s New Attorney General Pick
Last week was all about health in our household as we approach Thanksgiving, a time of year known for indulging in delicious food. I’m pleased to share that after six months, I’ve reached or almost reached my goal weight. Harlan and Chase had their check-ups, or “well visits,” at the pediatrician, and they’re both doing well (and as adorable as ever). Zach and I feel incredibly fortunate.
We all got our Covid and flu shots recently, and I have to admit, the Covid shot hit me pretty hard, which may be due to my previous history with the virus. But I strongly encourage everyone to get vaccinated, or at least have a discussion with your doctor about whether it’s the right choice for you.
With Thanksgiving approaching, I may take a break from Judicial Notice next weekend, but I’m considering a double edition the following weekend. Of course, it all depends on the news, which brings us to our latest legal updates.
Last week’s Lawyer of the Week is none other than Pam Bondi. After facing backlash, former Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his nomination as Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. attorney general. Trump wasted no time and nominated Pam Bondi, 59, to lead the Department of Justice (DOJ). Pam Bondi has an impressive track record, serving as Florida’s attorney general from 2011 to 2019. She was a trailblazer as the first woman to hold the position and has received accolades for her work on tackling issues like the opioid crisis and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Although some may critique Bondi’s lack of federal prosecutorial experience, her background as a state prosecutor and attorney general of Florida for nearly two decades speaks volumes. Rod Rosenstein, a former deputy attorney general, praises Bondi’s legal and political expertise, highlighting that it will serve her well at the Department of Justice.
Critics point out that Bondi’s staunch conservatism and loyalty to Trump could be stumbling blocks. She supported Trump’s defense during his first impeachment and backed his claims of election fraud in 2020. Despite concerns, some legal experts who know Bondi believe in her commitment to upholding the rule of law.
With Biden administration officials like Gary Gensler and Damian Williams set to leave their positions, transitions are on the horizon. Additionally, an interesting case involving a Stanford professor and AI-generated fake citations has caught the legal community’s attention.
As Pam Bondi’s confirmation process unfolds, we anticipate seeing how she navigates the challenges ahead. Stay tuned for more legal updates in our next edition of Judicial Notice.
